Pet Guide

Pets, like children, don't come with a manual, and it is hard sometimes to know if you are being a reasponsible owner and doing the right thing for them.  In this section we have listed a couple of brief information segments, from professionals, to get you started in the right direction. The area of food is a big issue, with not only humans, but also our pets. The phrase, "you are what you eat", also pertains to them, and I believe every devoted pet owner wants to have a long, happy and healthy life with their trusted friend.

Food that They Need

From the day they are born, our furry friends and companions require the same things as we do - love, nurturing, warmth, shelter, a balanced diet and exercise. Pets, like humans, need a balanced diet consisting of the necessary vitamin and mineral intake for their growth and stamina, to help them with their varied daily duties, whether they are working dogs, sporting dogs, lap dogs or the mischievious cat on the prowl or fast asleep somewhere cozy.

Puppies and nursing females need a diet high in calcium, protein, fats, vitamins and minerals to maintain healthy growth. Active dogs require a diet with extra saturated fat, carbohydrates and protein. Overweight/obese dogs require a diet low in fats/calories and high in fibre.

Cats, by creation, are strictly meat eaters, and require a diet that is high in protein, reasonable amounts of fat, minimal amounts of carbohydrates, and also has to have a balanced amount of vitamins, minerals and acids.

Pet Foods

Many Vets and animal professionals around the world are starting to acknowlege that our pets (cats and dogs) food has moved away from how nature intended,  and now contains too many additives, preservatives and chemicals.  Nature intended for our cats and dogs to eat raw meat, bones, fermenting plant matter (fruits, grains, etc) and young grasses, which gives all the essential nutrition they need to thrive. Cooking and processing their food only started back in the 1950's, which led to the canned pet food business, which some vets now believe this has contributed to the increasing health issues of our furry family members. Cooking of pet meat, damages and destroys essential nutrients that our dogs and cats need to stay healthy, and they also need raw bones for healthy teeth and gums.

When selecting a dry food for your pet, it is better for them that it contains grains that are crushed or cracked, finely chopped vegetables and is bleach free. This will enhance your pets fibre intake and be easy for them to digest.

Make them Behave

There are many different reasons and ways your pet may be misbehaving. I personally am not a dog trainer, and I am sure there are plenty in your area that may be able to help with what issue you could be having with your dog.  Being a proud owner of 4 Golden Retrievers, these beautiful and mischievous animals surely keep me busy and there are areas I need to work on from time to time. In my experience, I find that dogs misbehave, mainly because they are bored. Your dog needs to be stimulated, otherwise they will be barkers, diggers, chewers, escapees, etc. If your area of concern is more serious than this, I am a very big fan and advocate for Cesar Millan and truly believe in his approach and teachings. I use his advice and teachings with my own dogs when I need to deal with something, and I can say that they truly work. If you have tried everyone and everything else, and had no success, then my advice would be to jump on Cesar's website and see if he has a solution for your problem.

Fun Bird Facts

Many birds kept as pets, including doves, parakeets, and lovebirds, enjoy living in pairs for companionship.

The smallest bird egg belongs to the hummingbird and is the size of a pea.  The largest bird egg, from which the ostrich hatches, is the size of a cantaloupe.

A bird’s eye takes up about 50 percent of its head; our eyes take up about 5 percent of our head. To be comparable to a bird’s eyes, our eyes would have to be the size of baseballs.

The penguin is the only bird that can swim, but not fly. It is also the only bird that walks upright.

Owls turn their heads almost 360○ (a complete circle) but they cannot move their eyes.

Chickens have over 200 distinct noises they make for communicating.

When it comes to birds, the males tend to have the more glamorous feather shape, coloration, songs, and dances.  Female birds choose their mate based on how attractive they find them!

It is estimated that one third of all bird owners turn on a radio for their pet when they leave the house.

According to National Geographic, scientists have an answer for the age old dispute over which came first, the chicken or the egg.  Reptiles were laying eggs thousands of years before chickens appeared.  The first chicken came from an egg laid by a bird that was not quite a chicken.  Therefore, the egg came first.

The first bird domesticated by humans was the goose.

Kiwi birds are blind, so they hunt by smell.

Some breeds of chickens can lay colored eggs. The Ameraucana and Araucana can lay green or blue eggs.

The common phrase “eat like a bird” should mean something quite different!  Many birds eat twice their weight in food each day.  In fact, a bird requires more food in proportion to its size than a baby or a cat.

A group of larks is called an exaltation, a group of chickens is called a peep, a group of geese is called a gaggle, a group of ravens is called a murder, and a group of owls is called a parliament.

Chickens that lay brown eggs have red ear lobes. There is a genetic link between the two.

Crows have the largest cerebral hemispheres (brains), relative to body size, of any avian family.

Mockingbirds can imitate many sounds, from a squeaking door to a cat meowing
